Google has just announced Future Viewing, the first temporary exhibition of virtual reality artwork on the subject of online security. The exhibition consists of 10 pieces made with Tilt Brush, the Google app that lets you create 3D designs with simple hand gestures.

Tilt Brush: the virtual brush for 3D paintings

Cardboard over your eyes and a controller in your hand: Tilt Brush turns your movements into paintings with a brush and virtual palette. The effects are infinite: from cotton to leather, and from fire to stars to snowflakes. The whole room becomes your canvas.

Tilt Brush isn’t just for entertainment; it’s the first step toward a revolution in fashion, design and illustration. “Your room is your canvas. Your palette is your imagination. The possibilities are endless,” says the official blog out of Mountain View. And they add, Tilt Brush lets you paint in 3D space with virtual reality. Just choose your colors and brush, and go for it. Your room is a blank page, where you can walk all around and through your designs. And you can also choose materials that couldn’t be used in reality, like flames, stars or snowflakes.”

The applications are endless: from a fashion designer who uses Tilt Brush to create clothing collections, to an artist who makes 3D paintings, to an illustrator who sketches drawings for a fairy tale. But Tilt Brush is also a tool to encourage children to explore their freedom of expression, so really,  its true application is as a direct connection between mind and device.

Future Viewing: a virtual exhibit on online security

The works that make up Future Viewing were created for the project Vivi Internet al sicuro” (or “Live safe online”), which was a collaboration between Google, the Postal and Communications Police and Altroconsumo, a consumer protection group. A select group of up-and-coming artists used Tilt Brush to raise awareness about cybersecurity.

“We traveled over 2,600 km by bus with our partners, meeting thousands of people in 5 Italian cities – Milan, Cagliari, Naples, Bologna and Rome – and carrying out more than 4,000 security checks on Google accounts. Now we’re back with Future Viewing to remind people how important it is to take a few minutes to check their privacy and security settings,” says Vincenzo Riili, Marketing Director of Google Italia.

The exhibition is scheduled for March 3-5 on Via Vincenzo Capelli in Milan (near Piazza Gae Aulenti). Alongside the artwork, visitors will get advice from Google experts about staying safe online and checking their account settings. “Everyone is welcome to contribute their own creative touch with Tilt Brush, and to help create a work of art that represents online safety.” The best entries will be put up on display.
